Both the Web and desktop applications work the same way.  When the type of conversion is selected, the application dynamically generates the unit selection drop-down lists.

When the form is submitted, the application checks to ensure that the form is correcly filled out (numbers/decimals only, only one box entered) then selects the proper conversion equation.  There are a total of four equations: Fahrenheit to Celsius, Celsius to Fahrenheit, English to Metric, and Metric to English.

All conversions except temperature are done by reducing the number to be converted to the smallest available unit, converting that to the smallest unit for the other system, then multiplying or dividing the result to get the selected unit for the results.  The drop-down box selections provide the conversion factor and multipliers.

Instructions

  1. Use the drop-down box at the top of the page to select the type of conversion you would like to perform.
  2. Select the units you want to convert from and to using the drop-downs (all except Temperature)
  3. Enter a number (decimals OK) in one of the boxes, then hit submit. The result will appear in the empty box.
  4. To clear the form, hit "Reset".
