Ingredients:
  • Water (as needed)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup red split lentils, well rinsed
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder (cayanne pepper)

Instructions:
  1. Combine 4 cups water, turmeric powder, salt, and 2 tbsp of the oil and bring to a boil.
  2. Add the lentils, mix well, and return to boil.  Reduce heat to medium and cook, uncovered, for about 25 minutes or until the lentils are soft, adding water as necessary if the lentils begin to dry out (the consistancy should be like a creamy soup)
  3. Remove from heat and use a spoon to mash the cookmed lentils to a creamy consistancy.  Set aside.
  4. In a small pan, heat the remaing oil and add the cumin seeds
  5. When the cumin seeds begin to sizzle, add the garlic and red chili powder and sautee for about 20 seconds.
  6. Remove from heat and pour over the lentils. Mix well and serve hot.
